The HVAC Service Technician is responsible for providing maintenance and repair services on HVAC systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. They diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC systems, perform regular service, and ensure that systems run efficiently and meet safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
HVAC System Diagnosis and Troubleshooting:
- Diagnose and troubleshoot heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system malfunctions.
- Use diagnostic tools and techniques to identify issues in systems, including heating, cooling, ductwork, and refrigeration.
- Address issues related to electrical systems, thermostats, compressors, and refrigerants.
System Repair and Maintenance:
- Perform repairs on malfunctioning HVAC equipment, including replacing faulty parts, repairing leaks, or addressing electrical problems.
- Conduct regular preventative maintenance on HVAC systems, such as cleaning filters, checking refrigerant levels, and inspecting and lubricating moving parts.
- Ensure HVAC systems are operating within manufacturer specifications and in compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Customer Service:
- Communicate clearly with customers to explain the issues with their HVAC systems, repair solutions, and maintenance tips.
- Provide professional recommendations for repairs, replacements, and system upgrades based on the condition and age of the HVAC system.
- Maintain good relationships with customers through courteous service and follow-up to ensure satisfaction.
System Performance Testing and Calibration:
- Test and monitor HVAC system performance to ensure that it is operating efficiently and effectively after maintenance or repairs.
- Calibrate thermostats, system settings, and equipment to optimize performance and energy efficiency.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of service calls, repairs, and parts used during the job.
- Complete service reports and submit them in a timely manner.
- Ensure all customer information and work details are documented according to company procedures.
Compliance and Safety:
- Follow all safety guidelines and regulations while performing service work, ensuring both personal safety and the safety of customers.
- Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal regulations and building codes.
- Handle refrigerants and other hazardous materials safely and in accordance with EPA guidelines.
Inventory Management:
- Maintain and manage inventory of tools, parts, and equipment needed for repairs and service.
- Ensure that replacement parts and equipment are ordered and stocked appropriately for timely service.
Collaboration:
- Work with team members or other technicians when necessary, particularly on larger or more complex systems.
- Report issues to management and collaborate on troubleshooting strategies or service requests.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of HVAC technician training or apprenticeship program.
- HVAC certification (e.g., EPA certification for refrigerant handling).
- Solid understanding of HVAC systems, electrical and refrigeration systems, and troubleshooting techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication skills and customer service skills.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel to job sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in servicing both residential and commercial HVAC systems.
- Advanced knowledge of HVAC technologies, such as smart thermostats and energy-efficient systems.
- NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification or other industry-specific credentials.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs) and work in confined spaces.
- Ability to work in various environments, including attics, crawl spaces, or outdoor settings in varying weather conditions.
- Physical stamina for performing tasks that may require extended hours or physically demanding work.
